The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported in a confidential findings document that Syrian authorities under former President Bashar al-Assad constructed undeclared infrastructure consistent with a nuclear reactor at the Deir ez-Zor site. The site, which was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike in 2007, was examined by nuclear inspectors during an August verification mission. The agency concluded that the previous regime failed to report nuclear materials, operational facilities, and associated fuel fabrication sites as required by international safeguards agreements. The confirmation comes as Syria's current transitional administration cooperates with international monitors to account for previously undisclosed nuclear stockpiles and ensure non-proliferation compliance across the country.
