Emergency crews and military personnel in Nepal are racing against time to reach dozens of workers trapped inside subterranean chambers at the Rasuwagadhi and Upper Trishuli hydroelectric power facilities. The crisis follows catastrophic flash floods triggered by the collapse of a melting glacier in the high Himalayas along the border region between Nepal and Tibet. The resulting torrent of mud, boulders, and fast-moving water decimated river valley infrastructure, wiping out bridges and villages while leaving more than 1,200 people dead and thousands missing. Authorities believe that isolated dry pockets inside the submerged tunnels may still sustain survivors. Heavy excavators and search units are laboring through thick debris to clear blocked entry points and locate any remaining survivors before oxygen supplies become depleted.
