A United Nations fact-finding mission announced that it found reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed war crimes during military strikes on Iranian civilian infrastructure in February.
The report centered on an airstrike that hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school in Minab, which killed more than 150 civilians, including approximately 120 children. Investigators also highlighted a separate bombardment that damaged a sports complex and residential neighborhood in the city of Lamerd, resulting in 22 civilian casualties. The panel determined that the targets were clearly identifiable as civilian facilities and found no evidence that they served active military functions at the time of the attacks.
The findings also documented that Iranian authorities perpetrated crimes against humanity during their internal crackdown on anti-government demonstrations prior to the escalation. White House and Pentagon officials rejected the panel's conclusions, reiterating that American military operations adhere strictly to the international laws of armed conflict.
