The confrontation erupted after Pakistani security personnel reportedly intercepted and repelled an attempted cross-border incursion by Taliban fighters in the Gulistan and Chaman sectors of Balochistan. According to Pakistani security officials, troops returned fire with heavy artillery and mortars to neutralize positions from which incoming rounds originated. Intermittent exchanges of gunfire continued well past midnight as Pakistani forces maintained heightened vigilance across vulnerable sectors along the Durand Line.
The border skirmish followed a series of precision Pakistani aerial and drone strikes targeting ten suspected militant positions inside Afghan territory. Islamabad launched those retaliatory airstrikes after intercepting eight hostile drones that entered Pakistani airspace from Afghanistan near Kohat and the Torkham crossing. Pakistani authorities reiterated their long-standing complaints that armed militant factions are operating from Afghan sanctuaries to orchestrate cross-border attacks.
