Estonian officials have formally accused Russian intelligence agencies of ordering an arson attack on a Tallinn defense contractor that manufactures unmanned military robotic vehicles for Ukrainian forces.
The blaze broke out in the early hours of August 15 at a site belonging to Milrem Robotics, an Estonian developer widely known for its tracked THeMIS unmanned ground platforms. Emergency responders brought the fire under control quickly, preventing any casualties or serious disruptions to the contractor's operations. Following a cross-border investigation, three Latvian citizens suspected of carrying out the attack were detained in Latvia shortly afterward and extradited to Estonia.
Estonia’s Internal Security Service announced that gathered evidence confirms the sabotage was a premeditated operation commissioned and directed by Russian special services. Prime Minister Kristen Michal condemned the attack, stating that Moscow’s covert acts of sabotage are meant to intimidate European allies and weaken support for Ukraine. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna reiterated that Tallinn would not be deterred, vowing instead to push for harsher European sanctions and bolster military backing for Kyiv.
In response to the formal attribution, Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires to lodge an official diplomatic protest. The Kremlin dismissed the accusations, calling the Estonian government's conclusions baseless and irrational. European and NATO partners expressed solidarity with Tallinn, noting that the fire fits into an escalating pattern of hybrid warfare, covert sabotage, and disruption executed across the continent on behalf of Moscow.
