At least 28 people were killed in Tanzania’s Morogoro Region after a passenger bus collided head-on with a timber truck and caught fire on the Morogoro–Dar es Salaam highway early Friday, October 9, 2026.
The crash occurred near Mkambarani as the bus was traveling from Dar es Salaam toward Mbeya, in southern Tanzania. The truck was reportedly traveling from Iringa toward Dar es Salaam when its driver tried to overtake other vehicles, according to a regional fire and rescue official. The resulting collision set the bus ablaze and left it completely destroyed.
Joseph Mwasabeja, acting commander of the Morogoro Regional Fire and Rescue Force, said the driver’s identity had not initially been established. The number of injured passengers remained unclear, although some survivors were taken to hospital for treatment. Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital said it would later provide confirmed figures for the dead and injured brought to the facility.
The tragedy prompted President Samia Suluhu Hassan to offer condolences, while officials again urged motorists to follow traffic rules and exercise greater caution on Tanzania’s roads.
