Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa, a former Guatemalan anti-corruption prosecutor, was shot dead at a Guatemala City sports complex on Saturday, October 17.
Another man also died in the incident. Two men initially detained in the case were released the following day as investigators continued searching for suspects. The attack took place at Campo Marte while Solórzano Foppa was at the sports facility, where investigators later found dozens of spent bullet casings.
The other victim was identified as Gustavo Adolfo Aguilar Gamarro. Solórzano Foppa, aged 43, led the criminal analysis directorate of the Public Prosecutor’s Office from 2013 to 2016. He later headed Guatemala’s tax authority from 2016 to 2018.
He became known for his anti-corruption work, including investigations connected to the La Línea customs-fraud scandal. He had also briefly joined the legal defense team of journalist José Rubén Zamora. Police initially said two brothers were connected to the shooting, but they denied involvement.
A judge then ordered their release due to a lack of sufficient grounds to keep them in the case. According to an EFE report, the investigation is under judicial reserve, and no suspects had been identified after their release. President Bernardo Arévalo condemned the killing and called for both the shooters and those who ordered the attack to face justice.
