A Houthi missile strike on the al-Alam security forces camp in Yemen's Shabwa province killed 58 people and injured more than 200, Governor Awad al-Wazir said on Monday, October 19, as fighting in the country intensifies.
The governor stated that 14 people remained missing after the strike. Local sources said three ballistic missiles hit during a training exercise. Video verified by Reuters showed casualties at the scene.
Early reports initially gave a lower casualty count. Shabwa authorities first reported that more than 53 recruits were killed, and the number later rose to 58. The Houthi military spokesperson said the group targeted the camp, which he described as run by Saudi forces.
Saudi authorities had not immediately commented. The attack took place amid renewed clashes between the Houthis and Yemen's internationally recognized government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition. The two sides had largely kept to a 2022 truce until fighting increased again this year.
According to Reuters, government forces have recently tried to take back territory near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Meanwhile, the Houthis have advanced in the area and surrounded the city of Taiz.
