At least 22 people were killed and many more were injured when a bus and truck crashed on Kenya’s Nairobi–Mombasa highway on Sunday, October 25, near Mtito Andei.
The crash happened in the Kanga area of Makueni County, on a busy road linking the capital and the coastal city. The bus was carrying passengers back to Mombasa after they attended the funeral of their church pastor in western Kenya. The hospital that treated many of the injured reported that 24 people were hurt.
A separate account citing the county commissioner said six people were admitted to hospital. The collision is under investigation. Kenya’s transport safety authority said early information suggested there had been an unsafe attempt to pass another vehicle.
The cause had not been established. The county commissioner warned that the death toll could rise. The crash renewed concern about the highway.
Another crash had killed 17 people on the highway about three weeks earlier. The safety authority designated the stretch as a high-risk area for crashes. It said recommendations had been made to reduce the risks there.
