President Donald Trump said Friday, Oct. 23, that the United States may launch another military operation against Iran, raising the risk of more fighting as the nearly eight-month war continues without a diplomatic breakthrough.
Trump told a rally in Fort Myers, Florida, “We may do another little Epic Fury,” using the name the U.S. military gave its operation against Iran. He did not say when a new operation might happen or what it might involve. Earlier that day, Trump said the United States could end the war quickly.
But he questioned whether the United States should try to end it quickly or let it end gradually. His remarks came as higher fuel prices added pressure ahead of the Nov. 3 U.S. midterm elections. Earlier in October, Trump had said the United States would not attack Iran before the vote.
It was unclear whether Friday’s comments showed a change in that position or referred to possible action after the vote. Iranian military officials have warned against U.S. ships entering the Persian Gulf. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that renewed fighting would not change Iran’s position.
Talks are stalled, and both sides have indicated they may continue applying pressure or resume attacks. The possibility of further escalation remains.
