Sudan’s power utility said RSF drones struck five power stations on Monday, October 26, cutting electricity across large areas of southeastern Sudan and warning that the damage could put the national grid at risk.
Sudan Electricity Holding Company said two stations in Gedaref and one each in Sennar, White Nile and Al-Jazirah states were hit. The strikes disrupted electricity in all four states. The company said the equipment was badly damaged.
It said technical teams had been sent to inspect the sites and start repairs. It did not give a timetable for restoring power. An AFP report, citing an unnamed government official, described the outages somewhat differently.
It said large parts of Gedaref, Al-Jazirah and White Nile had lost power. It also said electricity had been out since about 2 a.m. in places in Al-Jazirah and Gedaref. In Gedaref, resident Babiker Youssef told AFP he feared the outage could spoil the refrigerated insulin his diabetic son needs.
The reports did not independently confirm the strikes. Xinhua said the RSF had not commented. The attacks took place during Sudan’s war, in which the army and RSF have increasingly used drones.
Repeated damage to power and other infrastructure has disrupted basic services. The UN has warned that drone strikes across the country are causing serious harm to civilians and essential infrastructure.
