Cyclone Arnab killed seven people in Andhra Pradesh after hitting the coast near Yanam, more than 180,000 people were evacuated in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, and the storm weakened as it moved inland.
The deaths were linked to falling trees, electrocution, a collapsed wall and other incidents caused by the storm. Strong winds and heavy rain hit coastal districts. Arnab crossed the coast over several hours near Narsapur, southwest of Yanam.
Wind gusts reached about 150 km/h before the storm weakened from a very severe cyclonic storm to a severe cyclonic storm. The storm uprooted trees, knocked down power lines, and damaged homes, roads and crops. This disrupted daily life and transport in affected areas.
Officials and emergency teams carried out relief and repair work. Weather authorities warned that heavy rain could continue in parts of the region and elsewhere as the storm moved inland. Odisha reported no deaths, which officials credited to preparations and evacuations.
