Kyrgyzstan has completed 327.5 kilometers of fencing and related construction work along its border with Tajikistan in Batken region, but official border marking and the placing of border markers are still under way.

The Batken regional administration announced the completion on October 29. It reported the fence length as 327 kilometers and 500.4 meters. Hundreds of kilometers of roads were also built in the area to give border patrols better access.

Reports put the roads’ total length at 338.5 kilometers in Batken and Leilek districts. The fence covers only part of the countries’ roughly 1,008-kilometer shared boundary. So, completing construction does not mean all boundary-marking work is finished.

The work follows a border treaty signed by the two countries’ presidents in March 2025. The treaty was signed after negotiators agreed on the remaining disputed sections. Disputes in the border region, where communities and farmland lie close to the boundary, contributed to deadly clashes in 2021 and 2022.

The September 2022 fighting killed more than 100 people in the two countries combined, according to Times of Central Asia. It displaced more than 140,000 people on the Kyrgyz side, according to Times of Central Asia. Residents have also raised concerns about compensation for homes and farmland affected by boundary changes.

Border markers are now being installed as part of the continuing process of officially marking the boundary.
