Honduras and IMF Agree on Final Review That Could Make $120 Million Available

Latin AmericaEconomy

Honduras and International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff have agreed on the final review of the country’s lending program, which could make about $120 million available if the IMF Executive Board approves it in December.

The deal covers the sixth and final reviews of Honduras’ Extended Fund Facility and Extended Credit Facility lending agreements. It also covers the IMF’s 2026 economic consultation. An IMF team led by mission chief Emilio Fernández Corugedo visited Tegucigalpa from October 20 to November 2 to conduct the talks.

The agreement does not mean the money has been paid. IMF staff will prepare a report for the Board. The Board is expected to consider the report in late December.

The Fund said the program helped keep Honduras’ economy stable. It said the program strengthened the country’s financial safeguards against pressures from abroad. The Fund also said the program helped keep Honduras’ debt sustainable despite external and climate-related shocks.

Honduras agreed to the three-year program, worth roughly $847 million, in 2023. The IMF’s latest assessment puts economic growth at 3.7% in the first half of 2026. It forecasts growth of 3.4% for the full year.

The assessment also noted that higher food and energy costs pushed inflation to 6.3% in September. The Fund has called for continued careful management of public finances and reforms to monetary policy, social protection and the energy sector.
