U.S. forces struck Iran’s Qeshm Island on Nov. 2 in what American officials called a limited defensive action, as Tehran warned it might retaliate and Qatar continued trying to mediate a deal.
Iranian state media reported several explosions on the island, which lies near the Strait of Hormuz. Witnesses reported seeing aircraft overhead. U.S. officials said the strikes targeted Iranian forces that were using missiles launched from the ground against American assets.
The Pentagon referred questions to U.S. Central Command. U.S. Central Command did not immediately comment. One official described the operation as limited and said it did not mean a return to major fighting.
The reported reason for the strikes and their scale have not been independently confirmed. A senior Iranian official warned that Tehran would respond forcefully to U.S. aggression, including beyond the region. The official said the two countries remained far from an agreement.
Qatar’s mediators have passed proposals between the two sides. Qatari officials said both governments remained committed to mediation. No breakthrough had been announced.
The strikes came amid mixed signals from Washington. Vice President JD Vance voiced optimism about a settlement through talks. He warned that President Donald Trump still had military options.
The episode shows the tension between diplomatic efforts to prevent renewed escalation and continuing military action around an important shipping route.
