Early reports said an attack on Al-Hadara market in Yemen’s Taiz province killed at least 20 people, while Houthi authorities and government-aligned officials blamed each other and responsibility was not confirmed.
The attack was reported on Friday, November 6, in Al-Waziyah district. The Houthis said Saudi-led coalition aircraft hit the market. Early Associated Press reports cited a Houthi health official who said at least 20 people had died and 15 were wounded.
The official said the death toll could rise. Later reports citing Houthi-run Al-Masirah gave a toll of 30 dead and eight injured. Those reports said rescue teams were still searching the rubble.
Yemen’s government-aligned military accused the Houthis of hitting the market with ballistic missiles. Local authorities said there had been no airstrikes in the district. The competing accounts have not been independently confirmed.
Available reports give different casualty figures. Taiz authorities called for evidence from the site to be kept and independently examined. The Houthis called for an international investigation into what they described as an air attack.
The market is in an area controlled by the Houthis. Fighting has intensified between the group and forces backing Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
