Ukrainian authorities said Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv overnight into Thursday, October 22, killing at least one person and injuring 22, hours after Moscow said it was open in principle to restarting peace talks mediated by the United States.
Earlier reports had put the number wounded at six, as residents sought shelter during the attacks. Ukrainian officials said the later toll included four children. They also said the strikes damaged infrastructure on a bridge across the Dnipro River.
The Kremlin’s announcement followed a Wednesday meeting in St Petersburg between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States could resume in November. He said security would be among the issues discussed.
US President Donald Trump said the diplomatic effort was closer than before to ending the war. Moscow expressed doubts about the content of proposals from Ukraine and European leaders. Moscow’s renewed indication that it was open to talks came as attacks continued.
Russian and Ukrainian officials said Ukraine also launched drones toward Moscow overnight. Kyiv has supported renewed talks. The latest strikes show a difference between public statements of openness and violence that is still continuing on the ground.
