Russia attacked Kyiv with missiles and drones overnight on October 21–22, killing one person in the capital and, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, leaving two people dead and 34 injured across Kyiv and surrounding areas, hours after Moscow said it was ready to resume talks mediated by the United States.
Ukraine said Russia launched 21 ballistic missiles in three waves and 210 drones during the attack. Ukraine’s Air Force reported that 181 drones were shot down or stopped. Strikes or falling debris were recorded at dozens of locations.
Damage in Kyiv included homes, energy and transport systems, businesses, shopping centers and a monastery. City officials reported one person killed and 24 injured in the capital, including children. Zelenskyy said three ballistic missiles carried cluster-munition warheads.
These warheads scatter smaller explosives over a wide area. Reports did not independently verify the allegation. The barrage followed a meeting in St. Petersburg between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.
After the meeting, Moscow said it was willing to restart talks next month. Zelenskyy said the strikes showed no real change in Russia’s approach to the war, despite the diplomatic contacts.
