Iran sent the United States a nuclear proposal through Qatar, but Tehran says it will discuss it only after Washington meets seven Iranian demands, and a senior Iranian official says the U.S. is reviewing it.
The official spoke anonymously on Thursday. The official did not say what the proposal contained or give a full list of the conditions. Iran’s top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, said during a visit to Russia that Tehran would not negotiate until its demands were met.
He also said Tehran would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the demands were met. Iran has publicly named some of its demands: lifting U.S. sanctions, releasing frozen Iranian assets and paying compensation for war damage. Washington has said nuclear issues must be part of any first negotiations.
This shows a difference over what must happen before talks can start. Qatar is acting as a go-between. Regional mediators are trying to prevent the U.S.-Iran conflict from starting again.
During these efforts, both sides have warned that fighting could start again. The proposal’s details remain undisclosed. There is no public indication that the United States has accepted Tehran’s conditions.
